New Car Joy

After almost a year of shopping, dithering, shopping, finding reasons not to buy, shopping some more, flirting with Cash for Clunkers, backing off, brooding, and finally buying (well, leasing), we got a new car last week. Now, in addition to pinching pennies, I am pinching myself...

Suddenly, the trusty (if noisy and ragged) 20-year-old BMW with 194,000 miles sits under the white pine in the driveway, awaiting its disposition. Save it for our son, the newly minted Manhattanite? Put an ad on the BMW Car Club of New Jersey website, where some carhead will appreciate the fact that it was one of just 50 7-series cars brought into the US in 1989 with stickshifts?

While these questions braise in my brain, I am giddy with new car joy. The quiet! The comfort! The handling, acceleration, sexy lines, terrific gas mileage (23 city, 31 highway), the built-in Bluetooth, iPod adapter, and satellite radio with 6-month prepaid subscription (and auto-mute in case the phone rings)! To say nothing of auto-hold.

Yes, auto-hold, a little button that, when you push it, allows you to take your foot off the brake when you come to a stop in stop-and-go traffic--and the car stays put until you press the accelerator again. Think about that. Thank you Volkswagen.

A long-time BMW fanatic, I have now migrated from Goliath to David in leasing this sleek, smooth, slick-handling VW CC four-door sedan (though VW insists on calling it a Comfort Coupe, hence CC).

I picked it up on Thursday morning--or, rather, the salesman, an extremely nice, cheerful, and helpful young man named Michael Sclafani, picked me up and drove me to the dealership (Bernardsville Volkswagen) to pick up the car.

In the shower, I kept thinking, it feels unreal. Yes, I signed a bunch of papers and wrote a check and all, but that seemed feathery, insubstantial compared to what they were about to "give" me--a ton and a half of automotive prowess, with four doors (that seal like a bank vault), four wheels (plus a full-sized spare), four cylinders (turbocharged!), heated seats (and heated mirrors), and, oh, you get the idea. And when I put the monthly payment on auto-repeat, it will all feel as painless as possible, provided I keep the bank balance in the black.

Over a span of many months, I had been to the dealership several times, first test driving a Jetta, then, after a lapse of a few months, the CC, which I fell in love with. The CC comes in four different versions, and I think I test-drove them all, my senses cranked up to 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. And each time I dutifully followed the salesman's instructions to turn left here and right there and so on.

After awhile, each test drive felt like Groundhog Day. I yearned to discover what the car felt like, how it responded to, the roads I travel every day in my 30-minute commute from Montclair to NJM's offices in Morristown.

Stepping out of the shower on Thursday morning, I felt a surge of ecstasy. They're going to hand me the keys and let me drive it wherever I want, for as long as I want (or for three years and 36,000 miles). Liberated, at last, from the strictures of the test drive route, I could, my God, go ANYWHERE! At any time, day or night, even just for the hell of driving the thing.

It felt magical, too good to be true...until I remembered the monthly payments. Oh well, the old Bimmer needs a new driveshaft, a $1,200 parts-and-labor transplantation, so look on the bright side--the VDub comes with free maintenance and, yup, free tires if they wear out, for the life of the lease.

But with a new car comes new car anxiety--I have to park in a lot where the spaces on either side of my pristine new machine are going to be occupied by vehicles with people flinging open doors willy-nilly and maybe scathing my unscathed bumper as they obliviously maneuver in and out of the space.

See, there is no such thing as unalloyed happiness. Though I have to admit, a brand new car comes close.

We traveled with the storm the whole way up through the states, and then down through two provinces.  The car handles very well in the rain.  According to Troy, there is only one problem with the car... "it doesn't come with a radar detector!!"  - Not that we got stopped for speeding, but could very easily!  Just a bit more "spunk" than our 1.8T that we just got rid of.
 
Ryan, just to let you know about the satellite radio, it stopped working when we hit New Hampshire.  I phoned today, and got everything transferred over to Canada.

Your service department...is outstanding.

I live in Hopatcong, and while it would be easier for me to drive 20 minutes to XXXXX and be made to feel like an idiot, I choose to drive 45 minutes to you folks because I know that here,  I am treated like a human and that my business matters. I think you should know how many times your service department has gotten me out of a sticky situation.

First let me say I am on my THIRD Volkswagon. I have gotten all three from XXXXX Motors.

Several years ago, after a good freeze, my window became stuck. I hit the power window button and *poof!* it came out of the clamps. I had a brand new baby and was using my car for work, so driving with  a window down in 20 degree weather was not an option. I called XXXXX, and I explained that I had a bit of an emergency. My window was stuck down, it was February, and I had an infant in the back seat. They told me, quite frankly, that they had a lot of emergencies and it would take several days before they could look at my car. I started to cry (could have been hormones, but I was pretty upset at how I was treated...) and called Bernardsville VW. Still crying, I explained my situation. Without hesitation, the man who answered told me to come down immediately. I did. I bundled up my son and myself, and drove on down. They took my car in, fixed the problem, and I was out the door in 15 minutes.
That was hardly my last experience of that type. It happened again earlier this year. I was having engine problems, again I called XXXXX, again I was spoken down to, again I cried and hung up on them (I know THAT time was not hormones...) and called Bernardsville. Again crying, and again I was told to come right down. I was treated very well upon arrival by your service advisor Joe, and all problems were again fixed promptly.
This morning I found myself in another jam with my car. This time, I knew not to bother calling Trend. I immediately called Bernardsville. I again spoke with Joe, who was again extremely helpful and professional (give that man a raise...) as well as understanding of my complicated situation with work. I spent the better part of the morning in your service center, but Joe was always keeping me updated as to the status of my car, and my now almost four year old son was happy in your play area (more dealerships need those!!!). In the end, the problem was fixed WAY faster than I could have expected from "other" people, and I felt compelled to tell you that again, after many times over the last almost four years, your service department has helped me and gone above and beyond what is normally expected of customer service. They are all a credit to your dealership and should be applauded.

In thirteen months, my lease is up. Expect me in your sales department.

VW was able to come up with their price--maybe volume, or maybe that price was going to change at closing?? One of those "I forgot to tell you" things. I will never know, because it didn't happen.

Hi!  I just wanted to let you know about the experience that my husband and I had regarding the servicing of our new Jetta for the initial 5,000 miles.  I was completely thrilled with how everything went.  I travel from about an hour and 15 minutes away.  I arrived at Bernardsville just before 6PM on Thursday.  I was waited on without a second thought.  My car was ready the next morning, pretty much right away.  When I returned to pick up my car, I initially saw that it had been washed on the outside.  Please understand that the last car I had, which was a new Saab, was never taken care of like that while in for a servicing...something as simple as a wash and vaccuum thrilled me.  Any questions I had regarding the servicing were answered right away.  Another plus was the price. 
 
I just wanted to share my positive experience with you...for it was partially because of the poor service I received on my last car that I did not return to that dealership.  You are wonderful.  Thank you!

The recent purchase of my new VW Jetta Wolfsburg was great.  I have only the best things to say about the staff of Bernardsville VW.  While i was in doing the financial paperwork my mother noticed that the front chrome grill on my new car was pitted.  This was eventually relayed to Tony the owner.  There was a brand new grill in stock and we were told by Tony that it would be put on today, no charge, no questions asked.  Tony even bought the car down to the service department and back around front again when the new grill was installed.  A few days later I sent an email regarding the radio codes, because they were no where to be found.  Within a half an hour I had a response with the radio codes.  Like I mentioned earlier I have only the best things to say about the staff, I will continue to rave about the service I recieved, and reccomend you to any who is in the market for a VW, as your service is of the highest quality.  Thank you for the great service and I look forward to dealing with you again in the future.

My experience was a fantastic one. Peter Franzoni is professional, personable, funny, articulate and a knowledgeable sales person and a pleasure to deal with from every aspect.
 
The GTI that I bought was clean, and in great condition when I took delivery of it on Tuesday evening. All the paperwork was in correct order and everything went smoothly except for the fact that you, Bernardsville VW, was dealing with a knucklehead, and that knucklehead left his EZPass in the car that he traded in. Peter was kind enough to salvage this for me and I will be by to grab it over the weekend. Peter went over the vehicle with me in detail, and showed me some options that I didn't really know were there. During this delivery period, he was patient and all-around a professional.
 
The part that was very satisfying was that your finance manager took a very modest approach to the "after sale" items like the warranties and so on. I mentioned that I don't typically buy them and had been burned before, and he took that for exactly what it was, a gentle suggestion to not over-sell them and make a foe out of an already guaranteed friend. He did mention them, but after my "suggestion" he kept the friend that was sitting in front of him and moved on with the closing details. A pro in my mind...
 
At the end of the day, If I decide to buy another VW it will certainly be from Bernardsville VW, and if Peter Franzoni is still selling VW's for you, I will certainly look him up.
Let me tell you what: It was a very, very, positive experience all around. Possibly even the best car buying experience I have ever had!!!
